Introduction and Practice Profile

Lisa Christine Pretty is a partner and Japanese-qualified attorney (bengoshi) based in our Osaka office. She is a member of the Osaka Bar Association and is fully bilingual in English and Japanese, with native-level proficiency in both languages.

Lisa's practice covers a broad range of domestic and cross-border matters, including general corporate and commercial matters, mergers and acquisitions, contract drafting and negotiation, and real estate transactions. She also has experience in dispute resolution, as well as family law and inheritance matters, enabling her to provide comprehensive support to both corporate and individual clients.

She is particularly adept at handling cross-border transactions and communications, frequently advising international clients entering the Japanese market, as well as Japanese clients expanding overseas. Her ability to operate seamlessly in both English and Japanese allows her to bridge legal and cultural differences and deliver practical, business-oriented solutions.

Lisa completed her undergraduate studies at Kyoto University in 2015 and obtained her Juris Doctor from Kyoto University Law School in 2017. She completed her legal training at the Legal Training and Research Institute of the Supreme Court of Japan and was admitted to the bar in Japan. She has been recognised in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch (Corporate and M&A Law) from 2025 onward.

She is known for her clear and pragmatic advice, as well as her ability to manage complex, multi-party projects efficiently. With her international perspective and strong communication skills, Lisa is well-positioned to support clients in navigating both Japanese legal frameworks and cross-border legal challenges.

Her publications include "Inheritance Law You Cannot Afford Not to Know for Inheritance Tax Practice" (Gyosei, 2023, co-author), "Key Considerations in Amending and Terminating International Contracts" (Business Law Journal, March 2023, co-author), and "Inbound Business Law Q&A" (Chuo Keizai-sha, 2024, co-author).
