Introduction and Practice Profile
Ken Masuyama is admitted in Japan and is also registered with The Law
Society of Hong Kong as a Registered Foreign Lawyer (Japanese law). His
practice focuses on cross-border legal matters involving Japan and Hong
Kong, with particular strength in supporting foreign individuals and
overseas businesses on their investments, business operations and legal
affairs in Japan.
Ken has extensive experience advising foreign companies on entering and
expanding in the Japanese market, including the establishment and management
of Japanese subsidiaries and branches, corporate and commercial contracts,
compliance, disputes, joint ventures and strategic investments in Japanese
businesses. He also regularly assists clients with inbound real estate
matters, including legal support for real estate acquisitions, investment
structuring, contract negotiation and closing, working closely with other
professional advisers where required.
Another key area of Ken's practice is estate planning and inheritance
matters with an international element. He advises foreign nationals,
cross-border families and internationally mobile clients on succession
planning, inheritance issues, family-related matters and the co-ordination
of Japanese legal aspects with overseas estates and assets. His practice is
particularly valued where clients require practical advice that takes into
account both legal and cultural considerations across jurisdictions.
In addition to his inbound practice, Ken also advises Japanese clients on
outbound matters, particularly business expansion into Hong Kong and other
overseas markets. He also handles intellectual property matters,
particularly in relation to copyrights, trade marks, designs and related
commercial agreements.
Ken graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Law and Kyoto University Law
School, and was admitted to the bar in 2015. He later obtained an LL.M. in
International Economic Law from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has
practised in Hong Kong as a Registered Foreign Lawyer at local law firms
since 2020. He is fluent in Japanese and English, and is also proficient in
Mandarin and Cantonese.
